Prelude to a story
Banging noise when furnace turns off

One of the new features in iOS 5 is the ability to assign alert tones for text messages from certain individuals. That is, SMS messages from my wife can now trigger a different sound than those from my friends.

It might not be obvious, but you can use this to prevent audio alerts when you receive messages from certain individuals. SImply install a "silent" tone, then assign it to those people who don't warrant an interruption. (This is a good technique for silencing phone calls too, just assign the silent tone to the person's ringtone in Contacts.)

There are plenty of free silent ringtones on the Internet, but you can save time by buying one of the many available in the iTunes tone store.
