Smart Home Hacks has a great method for being alerted when someone comes to your front door, even if you're not home at the time, but I'm really fond of the anti-pest doorbell described in this Boing Boing article. In order to ring the bell, visitors must insert a dime. Clever, but of course not entirely practical.
