If you're building a new house, you might be interested in GE's latest offering: SmartCom. It's a whole-house control & intercom system that's offered by the company's security division. Not the usual "DYI" thing that I prefer to write about, but sometimes having a ready-made solution can free you to tackle other projects. There's no shame in that.
